Escobaria
sneedii
Pawtucket, RI
Here's a hardy cactus! And yes it does flower for the first three
weeks in June! These plants will need good drainage and a sunny
location to thrive. This is another great specimen for a rock garden
since plants remain small. |
Opuntia
compressa
Pawtucket, RI
This is a "pad" cactus which also does quite well here in
Southern New England. This species does shrivel up in the winter,
but pops right back up when temperatures warm up in mid spring. |
Opuntia
kleiniae
Pawtucket, RI
This is a "pencil" cactus which is hardy here in Southern
New England. It will eventually grow into a 4 to 6ft shrub.
Very easy to grow, even in less than ideal soil conditions, but does
prefer a well drained soil with lots of sun. |

Opuntia
phaecantha v arenacea
Pawtucket, RI
This pad cactus proved to be hardy its first year here in Pawtucket,
RI. It started with only one pad, and in June the other 5 pads
grew. This pad does not "deflat" like the Opuntia
compressa during the winter. |
Opuntia
leptalcaulis
Pawtucket, RI
This is another "pencil" cactus which proved to be hardy
here in Southern New England. Some tip burn does occur on the branch
ends, but causes no unsightliness since new growth is very rapid in
spring. |
